Dr. Danny Merck Named New Superintendent
We're happy to introduce Dr. Danny Merck as the new Superintendent of the School District of Pickens County. Dr. Merck comes to the position with 23 years of experience in education, most of which were spent right here in the district. Dr. Merck has served in roles including teacher, coach, principal and district administrator. For the past two years, he has been the principal of Daniel High School.
He will officially step into his new leadership role on May 1. Until then, he will work with the board of trustees and our current Superintendent, Dr. Kelly Pew, to ensure a smooth transition.

Changes To School Calendar!
The 2013-2014 School Calendar was revised for the remainder of the school year on March 24. These calendars reflect changes because of snow days. We are using all three of the snow days that were built into the calendar at the start of the year, and the remaining snow days were forgiven by the board.

Key Changes:
  • School ends on June 6.
  • Exams (except for seniors) will be from June 3-6.
  • Schools will be open on April 21, May 23 and June 6.
  • Several grading period and report card dates have shifted.

Glider Competition Champs!
Pickens Middle School participated in the regional glider challenge at Liberty High School on April 10th.  The students designed and tested gliders constructed of Styrofoam sheets and balsa wood for the competition.  There were contests for distance flown, time aloft, and accuracy in landing near a target.  A composite score determined the winner.

Our school fielded boys’ and girls’ teams.  The boys’ team won the overall competition with the HIGHEST total score. Our girls’ team did a great job and earned a respectable score as well.  Boys’ team members included Erik Roach, Jonathan Jones, Brandon Moore, and Wesley Patterson.  Girls’ team members were Brianna Gilstrap, Stephanie Chappell, Caitlyn Murphy, Cheyenne Durham, and Montana Long.

Congratulations to these students and their sponsor, Dr. Alan Weekes, for a job well done!

Dress Code Reminder
Parents, we need your help!  As warm weather approaches, please ensure that your child dresses appropriately each day according to the following guidelines:
  • Skirts, dresses, and shorts should all fall within one inch above the knee
  • Spandex shorts, yoga pants, and leggings must be covered by a top that comes to one inch above the knee
  • Tank tops are to follow the “four-finger” coverage rule; shirts should not be cut out under the arms
  • Sheer shirts and blouses need a dress-code appropriate top underneath them
  • Skin-tight, revealing apparel is not allowed
We want our students dressed for success each day at Pickens Middle.  Thank you for helping us make this happen!

Pickens Middle Continues Its Quest to GO GREEN!
This year Pickens Middle continues to work on its Green Steps program.  A $500 merit grant was awarded to Ms. Louise Hope by DHEC’s Champions of the Environment.  This grant assists in beginning the development of a Conservation Gallery, an inner concreted courtyard area that will be available for classes, teachers, and even parents to visit to learn more about conservation of our environment.  The project is just beginning, and students are involved in the beautification and educational process.  For more information, read the attached grant application.  We certainly welcome volunteers and assistance!
Science Day Camp Information
This year's Science Camp will be a one-day experience held on Tuesday, June 10th from 9am until 3:30pm at Pickens Middle School.  More information about the camp can be found here; students must sign up by May 23rd in order to participate.  Please contact Mrs. Laura Anderson with any questions.
