Vaccination Requirement for Rising 7th Graders
March 31, 2014
Current 6th grade students will need to receive a Tdap vaccine before the 2014-15 school year in order to meet the SC Immunization regulations.

To assist parents of rising 7th graders with this vaccine requirement ahead of the 2014-15 school year, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is working with school districts to provide the Tdap vaccine to current 6th grade students.

This week, 6th graders will be receiving a packet with information and a permission form from school. If you would like for your student to receive the Tdap vaccine at the school based vaccine clinic, you will need to return the completed permission form to the school by Tuesday, April 8.

If you have any questions, you may contact your school nurse or Angela Watson, RN, coordinator of nursing for the School District of Pickens County at (864) 397-1048.

Flu Season Is Here Again
January 13, 2014
Students have begun to come to school with flu symptoms over the past week, and we need the help of all our employees and parents to help stop the spread of disease!

We want to encourage our employees to be mindful of germs and wash their hands frequently and thoroughly.

Parents, if you see any symptoms of illness, we strongly urge you to keep your child home. Please do not risk the well-being of your own child or others in order to pursue a perfect attendance certificate. Your child's health is much more important to us than his or her attendance record!

For more information on how to prevent and identify the flu, please click here.

School To Dismiss Early On November 14
November 6, 2013
Schools in Pickens County will dismiss early on November 14 because of anticipated traffic issues from the Clemson football game that night.

Elementary schools will dismiss at 1 p.m.; middle and high schools will dismiss at 2 p.m. Also, afternoon 4K classes will be cancelled. Morning 4K will continue as usual.

We anticipate that traffic in the Clemson area and around U.S. 123 in Easley would make it impossible for buses to take students home in a reasonable amount of time unless school is dismissed early. We also have concerns about the safety of student drivers in the heavy traffic.

Schools may continue after school activities such as athletic practices at the principal's discretion.

In an effort to make our schools the best they can be, the School District of Pickens County is conducting a Parent Survey.  We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey about the school your child attends. The survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. If you have more than one child enrolled in our district, you may re-use the same link to access other schools.

2013 Registration Q & A

Vaccine Requirement for Rising 7th Graders
August 1, 2013
All South Carolina 7th graders now are REQUIRED to show proof of a Tdap shot to attend school. These mass vaccination clinics are a great opportunity for parents of rising 7th graders to get a free Tdap shot and meet entry requirements for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Tdap shot protects kids and adults from three dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough.

Students must have proof of having received the shot before school starts on August 20.

For a list of clinics offering the vaccine,

2013 Handbook Available

Back to School 2013: A Handbook for Students and Parents is ready to view and download. The student and parent handbook contains vital information for the coming school year.

Vaccination Required for Rising 7th Graders
March 19, 2013
Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, all students entering seventh grade must have received a Tdap vaccine in order to attend school. The Tdap vaccine protects students from tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis).

This vaccine is routinely recommended to be given at 11-12 years of age; however, if a Tdap vaccine was needed at an earlier age, a dose received on or after your child's seventh birthday will meet this requirement.  You must give your child’s school a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization to prove your child has had the shot.
Please avoid the last-minute rush.  Make an appointment with your rising seventh grader’s healthcare provider today to get the newly required Tdap vaccine, along with other vaccines that are recommended for your child’s protection.

Classes Enjoy the Fall Season
November 5, 2013
In October, Mrs. Bahs’s and Mrs. Wilkins’s classes were busy learning about internet and fire safety. The Pickens Fire Department gave a presentation and brought a fire engine for the children to see.  Students also enjoyed pumpkin carving and baking Rice Krispie treats in the new class kitchen on Halloween. They served up the treats in a long pan with tootsie rolls and frosting to create a graveyard, and each one loved learning to follow a recipe (and eating their own home-cooked goodies!). These students are blooming into wonderful readers and should soon begin to write using the words they have learned. In November, students will study about Thanksgiving and be able to participate in several activities to help them remember the true meaning of this special holiday.

Job Shadowing Day
January 11, 2012
Our annual Job Shadowing Day for students is Friday, February 3rd.  Packets, which are being sent home today, are due to the Guidance Office by Wednesday, January 25th. NO LATE PACKETS will be accepted because of the short turn-around time.
Students must follow these guidelines when job shadowing:
  • Seventh-graders cannot shadow at the same site (or type of site) as last year. For example, if a student shadowed in a third-grade classroom last year, he or she cannot go back to an elementary school this year. The student may, however, shadow at a middle or high school.
  • Students may not shadow at Pickens Middle School.
  • A student who job shadows will initially be marked absent that day; when the student turns in the required Job Shadowing Interview Questionnaire to his or her homeroom teacher, the absence will be changed to present
Please call the Guidance Office at 397-4104 with any questions.

Team Phoenix Soars
September 23, 2008
Team Phoenix, led by Dr. Susan Hilyer, is part of the South Carolina State Department of Education and one of 25 such teams across the state. Dr. Hilyer states, "Our goal is to incorporate state standards with a community project outside the classroom. This year our project will include the investigation of the recently discovered petroglyths (ancient rock carvings) and the other local history found at Hagood Mill and within Pickens City Limits. We have just made the first of four trips to the Mill. We thank Mrs. Ginger Chastain and Mrs. Mickey Miller who helped us. Students learned about old-time measurements, participated in scavenger hunts, hiked a trail, and wrote and drew in their sketch books. We look forward to our next trip on October 10th." Any parents interested in going on the trip should call the guidance office for volunteer training.
