Meet the Teacher day and registration for all elementary schools will be Thursday, August 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Vaccination Required for Rising 7th Graders

Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, all students entering seventh grade must have received a Tdap vaccine in order to attend school. The Tdap vaccine protects students from tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis).
This vaccine is routinely recommended to be given at 11-12 years of age; however, if a Tdap vaccine was needed at an earlier age, a dose received on or after your child's seventh birthday will meet this requirement. You must give your child’s school a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization to prove your child has had the shot.

Pickens County Has Talent Finalists Announced!

We are happy to announce the finalists for Pickens County Has Talent, sponsored by Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative.
The contestants were chosen by audience votes at the four preliminary shows at Daniel High School, Pickens High School, Liberty High School and Easley High School, and they have beat out dozens of competitors for a chance at first place.

The Grand Finale will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday night in the Easley High School Auditorium. $500 will be awarded to the first-place winner, $300 to the second-place winner, and $200 to the third-place winner of Saturday’s contest.

Sneak Peek: New Pickens Middle School

Renovations are nearly complete to convert the former Pickens High School building into a new Pickens Middle School for the 2013-2014 school year.
This month, construction crews have put some of the finishing touches to make the building finally look like the school that students will step into in August. The entryways, cafeteria, hallways and practice rooms have started to take on the appearance that we hope students will remember fondly for years to come. All Schools Dismiss at 10 a.m. Today
January 25, 2013
Because of a high probability of ice on the roads in the afternoon, Pickens County public schools will be dismissed at 10 a.m., Friday, January 25. We have had early reports of freezing rain in the northern part of the county, and we are avoiding the risk of families driving home from school in dangerous conditions. All after school activities are cancelled as well. Activities will resume as normal on Saturday.

Kindergarten Registration Begins January 7th
January 3, 2013
Parents are encouraged to register kindergarten students during the scheduled dates of January 7 through January 31, 2013. However, students may be registered at the elementary school in their attendance zone during normal school hours anytime before the first day of school begins.

Pickens County Has Talent Is Back!

SDPC is holding its second annual Pickens County Has Talent Competition, sponsored by Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative. The event is open to everyone in Pickens County!
Winners from the shows in the Daniel, Easley, Liberty and Pickens areas will compete for first prize on February 23. Every kind of talent is welcome as long as submissions remain “G-Rated.”
Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships will directly support Pickens County Schools. There will be a total of five shows: one in each region plus the Grand Finale.

The 2011-2012 Report to the Community is ready to view!
As mandated by the Educational Improvement Act of 1984, each school district in South Carolina must publish by April 30th an annual report detailing financial and academic information for the preceding academic year. The report contains information about our district, including school and staff information, test scores, financial reporting, and enrollment.
Our report also includes Points of Pride and a summary of progress made on the Building Program over the past school year.

Yearly Flu Vaccines

The school district is partnering with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control to offer flu vaccines to our students.
Vaccine clinics will be held at Daniel High School on November 7, at Pickens High School on November 8, at Liberty High School on November 13 and at Gettys Middle School on November 14.
Parents are reminded to be sure to bring their child's Medicaid or health insurance card to the clinic.

Student, Teacher Websites Still Under Construction
September 4, 2012
The school district is still in the process of upgrading to a new online information system for parents for the 2012-2013 school year. Until the upgrade is completed, grades, assignments and attendance information will not be available to parents. We expect this process to be complete within the next few days, and we will notify parents when they can begin logging in to check grades, assignments and attendance information.
We are also in the process of updating student information for teacher websites for the 2012-2013 school year. We expect the websites to be ready within the next couple of weeks, and we will notify parents when they are complete. Until then, we appreciate your patience during this process.

The school district is in the process of updating student information for teacher websites for the 2012-2013 school year. Because this upgrade will be completed shortly following Labor Day, grades, assignments and attendance will not be available to parents online prior to September 3rd. Career & Technology Center Will Hold Open House for Prospective Students

Pickens County students and parents are invited to the Prospective Student Open House at the Pickens County Career & Technology Center (CTC), 990 Chastain Road, Liberty, on Thursday, January 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. Dinner will be served by students in the CTC Culinary Arts Program.
Students and parents can visit twenty classrooms and labs to explore the wide variety of educational experiences CTC offers for students in grades 9 through 12. Instructors and current students will be available to answer questions and demonstrate classroom activities. Programs offered by CTC
All-County Bands Clinic, Concert Scheduled

The Pickens All-County Bands will perform at a free concert on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the new Pickens High School auditorium. The concert concludes a two-day clinic for the Pickens All-County Junior Band and the Pickens All-County Senior Band. Clinicians Jocquin Fuller, from Dutchcreek Middle School in Rock Hill and Dr. Lorrie Crochet, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Winthrop University, will lead the bands.
Earlier in December, over 300 students auditioned before the School District of Pickens County band directors for seats in the all-county band. With representation from all five middle schools, 78 students were seated in the Pickens All-County Junior Band. The Pickens All-County Senior Band includes 63 students from all four high schools “We are proud of these students and congratulate them on their accomplishment,” says Patrick A. Mainieri, director of bands at Gettys Middle School. “We also want to express our appreciation to Pickens High School Principal Marion Lawson for hosting the event at Pickens High School this year.” The concert on Friday is free and open to the public.

December 19 is a Professional Learning Day for staff; students do not attend. Schools reopen on Monday, January 2, 2012. Get Ready for Winter Weather!

With the arrival of cold weather, we want to remind everyone of our inclement weather procedures. Decisions to close schools or delay opening because of weather are always based on student safety. Our goal is to communicate the decision by 6:00 a.m. through a ParentLink message and a website announcement. We also notify local television stations.
In case of weather emergencies, we can also send text messages—if parents request the service. Parents who request texts are responsible for all associated charges. To receive a text, parents must complete the Text Messaging Permission form and return it to their child’s school.
Remember that ParentLink uses contact information from our PowerSchool student database. To make sure you receive calls, e-mails, and texts, please notify your school immediately when your contact information changes.
Pickens County Has Talent: Looking for Volunteers

Pickens County Has Talent is a county-wide talent show that will showcase the best of the best within Pickens County. All proceeds from the family-oriented, fun event are specifically earmarked for education in Pickens County – all funds raised will be used for instructional supplies that directly benefit students.

FIRST LEGO League Contest
November 4, 2011
SDPC will be offering a first-ever "friendly" FIRST LEGO League “Coopertition” event on Monday, November 21 at Gettys Middle School from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The competition will allow our teams to get together to participate in the LEGO League experience and will be very similar to an FLL regional competition except much smaller in length and scale. The contest will enable teams to experience a competitive event, including the actual table and contests with a referee, teamwork judging, presentation judging, and technical judging. The upgrade of the LunchBox system that allows parents to access and manage a student’s lunch account online is complete. Internet access to student accounts through the Student Nutrition Services website has been restored.

Summer Science Camp
May 13, 2013
Pickens Middle will host its annual Summer Science Camp the week of June 24th - 28th for rising 6th-8th graders at our NEW school location (the former Pickens High School campus). Campers will have a chance to learn about many different science disciplines including anatomy, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology. They will participate in hands-on science activities such as dissecting an animal, using microscopes to view microorganisms, building a rocket, and making fossils.
The fee is $70, which includes admission to the camp, materials required for the week, a drink for each day (students are encouraged to bring their own snack), and lunch on Friday. There are only 120 spots available on a first come, first served basis. A $35 deposit upon registration will reserve a spot. Click here

Talent Show

The Pickens Middle Beta Club will host its annual talent show on Thursday, May 23rd at 6:30pm in the gym. Students, parents, friends, and community members are welcome to attend. Tickets cost $3 at the door, and children age 5 and younger are free. A repeat performance of the show will be held on the last day of school, June 6th, beginning at 9am. All proceeds from the show will go towards our school's donation to Relay for Life. Thanks for supporting this worthy cause!
PASS Testing
May 1, 2013
All Pickens Middle students will be required to take the PASS test May 7-10; this is a mandatory statewide assessment that is given to 3rd-8th graders in South Carolina. Please do NOT schedule appointments on testing dates; students will not be allowed to leave early if testing is still taking place, per state requirements. Students need to be here on time each day, well-rested and fed, so that they can be alert and ready to do their very best on the test.

Clemson Offers Program for Students

Pickens Middle students are invited to participate in “E-magine Your Future” in the Death Valley Stadium at Clemson University on Saturday, April 20th from 9am to 3pm. Participants will be challenged by Clemson engineering & science faculty and students with hands-on activities to encourage them to consider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) careers. Beta Club members are reminded that the final service hours for the 2012-13 school year are due by May 31st. Festival Band Earns Superior Rating!
April 8, 2013
Thirty-eight students from the Pickens Middle School Festival Band received a SUPERIOR rating-the highest rating possible- in the State Concert Festival at Byrnes High School on Thursday, March 28th. They played for five judges who rated them in ten categories based on two performances. For the first performance, students played three pieces of music they had prepared ahead of time. The second performance consisted of the students playing a piece of music that neither they nor the director had ever seen.
The band has been preparing for Concert Festival for about two months, and the students have put in countless hours of work during in-school and after-school rehearsals with their director, Mr. Mason Mumford. The work paid off for them as they put on a fantastic performance to earn their Superior rating; we are very proud of them!
Energized Guyz Visit PMS

The Energized Guyz from Duke Energy made a stop at Pickens Middle on Friday, March 22nd to share ways that students and their families can help conserve electricity. Sixth-grade students attended the assembly and had a few laughs while learning about their role in energy conservation. All students will receive a flyer about the program with information about requesting a FREE energy kit from Duke Energy. All families are encouraged to sign up for the free kit in Pickens Middle's name-we could win $2000 if our school has the most requests! Special thanks to Mrs. Riddle for bringing the Energized Guyz to our school!

PLEASE be sure that your children come to school well-rested and on time so that they will be able to do their best on the test! Box Tops Drive

We will begin our Hearts for Box Tops campaign on Monday, February 11th. The homeroom competition will end February 22nd. Students: please ask family members and neighbors to save Box Tops for us. Valentine's Day Dance

We will participate again this year in the Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars Program, where students who read 4 books in 4 weeks earn a spot at the Celebration Game on April 15th. There will be all kinds of prizes and incentives that night, and interested students should stop the library during the week of Feb. 4th to pick up information about the program. Finding Your Voice Camp Info

Finding Your Voice camp is available for 11-12 year-old females from our school; the camp’s goal is to improve girls’ self-confidence while teaching them about setting and achieving goals related to physical activity. The camp will take place March 8th-10th at the Clemson Outdoor Lab and includes all housing and meals from Friday dinner through Sunday lunch. The Beta Club is sponsoring a canned food drive for a local food pantry the week of November 26th-30th. Non-perishable food items (boxes or cans) will be accepted and donated to help those in need in our community. The Pickens Middle SGA is sponsoring a TOY DRIVE for Country Santa, a local charity that collects and distributes toys to needy children each year. Students are asked to bring in new, unwrapped toys to their homeroom until December 7th. Some of the needed toys are: baby toys, baseballs, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, dolls/doll accessories, games, Legos, puzzles, toy trucks, and teen gifts (flat irons, hair dryers, makeup, jewelry, watches, wallets, etc.). We will be selling cookie dough November 2nd-15th. Students have brochures showing all the delicious flavors and details, and the student who sells the most will receive a $100 prize! The second-place salesperson earns $50, while the third best seller gets $25. The top-selling homeroom will be rewarded with a cookie party, and students who sell at least five tubs will earn a free tub! All money and forms should be turned in by November 15th, and the cookie dough may be picked up after 12:00pm on December 6th.

Career Day for all Pickens County eighth-grade students will take place at the SDPC Career and Technology Center on December 5, 2012. PMS eighth-graders will attend the afternoon session from 12:00pm until 1:10pm. Buses will leave the school around 11:15am and return around 2:00pm. Sparks Volleyball Tri-County Conference and Tournament Champions!

The Lady Sparks Volleyball team was crowned Regular Season Champions on October 16th following their 3-0 victory over Liberty. The Lady Sparks went 12-1 for the season, losing only to Edwards during the regular season.
On October 20th, the volleyball team won the end-of-season tournament by defeating Liberty, Edwards, and Gettys on their way to the tournament finals where they had to again defeat Gettys.

Band Students Recognized

The PHS marching band had its highest placement in history this past weekend at the Upper State 3A Championships. They finished 3rd with a score of 93.4, only .3 points behind 2nd place and two points behind 1st place. The band will compete this Saturday at the 3A State Championships. We have 5 students from Pickens Middle who compete in the marching band: Chloe Brandt, Allison Sims, Justin Kelly, Elizabeth Bramel, and Myles Bryan. Congratulations!

Library PASS Schedule

The library is still open for student business, but students may not physically come in to use computers or browse the shelves. A checkout table and catalog computer will be set up before and after school just outside the library doors, and students may knock on the door if they need help throughout the day. Students are welcome to check in, check out, renew, pay fines, or do any other "library business" as needed until all PASS testing materials have been packaged and returned after testing. We are making a school-wide effort to boost confidence about the PASS test and would love to have our parents involved in making this happen. Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Sonoco Recycling, and DHEC's Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling established Green Steps Schools in 2003 as part of South Carolina’s “Resource Conservation Challenge.” This environmental education initiative encourages individual schools to take annual steps toward becoming more environmentally responsible. Pickens Middle School has taken the environmental challenge this school year and will become certified as a Green Steps School. PMS Earns Palmetto Silver Recognition

Pickens Middle recently earned its first Palmetto Silver Award from the South Carolina State Department of Education! Our school met the criteria for the Palmetto Silver Award for consistent growth in student achievement over three years. Section 59-18-1100 of the EAA established the Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards Program to give recognition to schools that attain high levels of absolute performance and schools that attain high rates of growth. Our Palmetto Silver Award is in recognition of three years of strong performance. Congratulations to all students, faculty, and staff whose hard work earned this award for our school!

Seventh-grader Danielle Yother won first place at the recent Pickens County Has Talent competition; she was awarded $500 in cash and a guitar autographed by Miranda Lambert. Earning $350 and second place for the contest was the band Redwire, which consists of Bryson Capps (6th), Jake Gantt (7th), Jed Hager (7th), and Morgan Parton (7th). We are so proud of these talented students and look forward to celebrating their success many more times in the future!

The program's authors, Dr. Gerald and Mrs. Grace Lieberman, presented the teachers with an award recognizing their hard work and commitment to the program. Reading All-Stars Challenge

Students have received a packet of information about the Greenville Drive's Reading All-Stars Challenge, and we hope that every child will participate! Participating readers need to read five approved books in a five-week period (now until March 16th) and turn in their signed forms to Mrs. Dalton in the media center by March 16th. Those students will receive a FREE ticket to the May 14th Greenville Drive baseball game at Fluor Field and will have lots of rewards awaiting them at the game, including a chance to throw out the first pitch! New Immunization Requirements

After a stellar 12-2 regular season, the team lost to Glenview Middle School on Thursday night, Feb 10th, in the conference championship game. Job Shadowing Day

Our annual Job Shadowing Day for students is Friday, February 3rd. Packets, which are being sent home today, are due to the Guidance Office by Wednesday, January 25th. NO LATE PACKETS will be accepted because of the short turn-around time.
Students must follow these guidelines when job shadowing:
- Seventh-graders cannot shadow at the same site (or type of site) as last year. For example, if a student shadowed in a third-grade classroom last year, he or she cannot go back to an elementary school this year. The student may, however, shadow at a middle or high school.
- Students may not shadow at Pickens Middle School.
- A student who job shadows will initially be marked absent that day; when the student turns in the required Job Shadowing Interview Questionnaire to his or her homeroom teacher, the absence will be changed to present.
Students Earn Seat in All-Region Honor Band

Congratulations to Zachary Chastain, Matthew Martin, and Michael Nelson for earning a seat in the prestigious 115-member South Carolina All-Region Honor Band. This is a tremendous honor for these eighth-graders who competed against numerous high-schoolers and who now have the opportunity to audition for the All-State Honor Band on January 30th. Beta Pancake Breakfast Benefits Relay for Life

The PMS Jr. Beta Club will sponsor a pancake breakfast at Applebee's in Easley on Saturday, February 11th from 7:45-9:45 am; all proceeds from the meal will benefit Pickens County's Relay for Life fundraiser in the spring. Special Friends Walk

The Beta Club will sponsor the 2nd annual Special Friends Walk to raise money for Special Olympics Area 13 (Pickens and Oconee County) on Wednesday, November 23rd at the PMS track. This walk is designed to raise awareness of various disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism and cerebral palsy. We will “kick off” the walk at 8:30am with a pep rally, and participating students will then walk the track in honor of our friends. Each student will receive a treat before going back to class at 10am.
The entrance fee for participation is $10. A t-shirt may be pre-ordered by November 9th for an additional $7. Students are also encouraged to ask friends and family for donations for the Special Friends Walk.

Canned Food Drive

The Beta Club is sponsoring a Clemson-Carolina Food Bowl from now until November 18th. Score for your favorite team by bringing in canned goods or non-perishable boxes of food. For every three (3) cans or boxes a student brings, he or she will be given a ticket for a drawing for Clemson, Carolina, and Furman gifts. All donated food will be given to United Christian Ministries to help meet our community's needs during the holiday season.

Pickens Middle's athletics department has lots to be proud of this year! Our VOLLEYBALL team, coached by Chelsea Gambrell, was once again the COUNTY CHAMPION with no losses to any district team and only one loss during the entire season. They also took 2nd place in the Tri-County Middle School Atheltic Association's tournament on October 22nd, competing against and defeating multiple teams from Pickens, Anderson, and Oconee County. Congratulations, girls, for exhibiting excellence on the court!

Band Members Earn Recognition

The Pickens High School Marching Band competed in the 4A Upper State Marching Band Championship on Saturday. The band had their highest placement ever at Upper State, placing 4th out of 14 bands and qualifying to compete at the State Championship this Saturday. A significant part of the band’s success can be contributed to the high level of performance of our PMS 8th graders (led at our school by Mr. Mason Mumford) in this varsity-level activity.

Teen Talk

Teen Talk is a youth development program administered by Baptist Easley Hospital for the purpose of building strong families and communities. This is a weekly volunteer program that is offered during lunch time. All students are welcome to attend and must have signed parental consent to join. In addition to free lunch, various incentives are offered to students that participate. In each session, students meet in a group setting with a trained facilitator to discuss and learn about issues such as life-skill building and emotional, physical, and sexual health. Group sessions start the week of Sept. 19th, and consent forms are available in the guidance office. For more information please contact the guidance office at 397-4100.

Free Summer Meals

The USDA is sponsoring a free meals program for Pickens County children age 18 and younger this summer at West End Elementary and Pickens Elementary. Breakfast (7-8am) and lunch (11am-1pm) will be served Monday through Friday from June 6th through August 19th, with no meals being served July 4th. Youth Board Applications

Application packets for the 2011-12 Youth Board are now available in the Guidance office. The purpose of the Pickens County Youth Board is to provide the community and its schools with alcohol and drug abuse awareness; portray Board members as role models to the community and its schools; and to provide the community with drug- and alcohol-free projects and events. Membership is open to any rising 9th through 12th grader in a Pickens County high school. The deadline for receiving all applications is 5:00pm on May 20, 2011.

Baptist Easley Hospital is recruiting teens ages 13-22 for its summer student volunteer program. The purpose of the Student Volunteer Program is to introduce young people to a variety of health care careers and to provide supplementary assistance to the professional staff at the hospital.

Tuesday, Feb. 22nd is rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade parent night in the gym. Library Overdue Fines

Beginning March 1st, the media center will begin charging $.10 per day for library books that are ten (10) or more days overdue. For example, a book that is 20 days overdue will accrue a fine of $2.00 when turned in to the library. Fines are being reinstated because of the high number of late books over the past months. Please remind your child to return his or her books in a timely manner so that others may enjoy them.

Approximately 250 sixth- and seventh-graders spent last Friday exploring various career fields in the local community. Students were able to work alongside adults for the entire day at jobs of interest during our annual Job Shadowing Day. Special thanks to the Guidance staff for coordinating this fun-filled day for our students as they prepare for their future careers.

Parents, please help all of our children at Pickens Middle stay well by keeping your child at home if he or she has the following symptoms:
- Fever of 100 degrees or more (MUST be fever-free with NO MEDICATION for at least 24 hours)
- Fatigue, nausea/vomiting, chills, headaches, severe sore throat (difficulty swallowing) and/or body aches [or any combination of these]
Also, please teach your children to observe these healthy habits daily to avoid contacting or spreading various illnesses:

Country Santa Toy Drive

The SGA is sponsoring a Country Santa toy drive through December 17th, and students are asked to bring in new (or gently used) unwrapped toys for needy children in our area. Country Santa is not able to accept stuffed animals at this time, but each homeroom teacher has a list of the most-needed toys for each age group. Special Friends Walk

On Tuesday, November 23rd the Beta Club will sponsor a Special Friends Walk to promote awareness and acceptance of children with disabilities. All students may participate by paying a $10 entrance fee with the option of collecting donations from family and friends. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Area 13 (Pickens and Oconee County). We will start with a pep rally at 8:30am, and the walk will conclude at 10:00am. Please consider joining this worthy cause.

Middle School Football Jamboree Scheduled

The first annual School District of Pickens County Middle School Football Jamboree will be held on Monday, August 30th at 5:30 pm at the Liberty High School Stadium. The first half will have Gettys Middle School and Edwards Middle School playing each other. In the second half, Liberty Middle School will line up against Pickens Middle School. Tickets for this event will be $5.00 and the proceeds will benefit all four teams. Please come out and support your favorite team as they kickoff the middle school football season.

Students Win Big at Special Olympics

Pickens Middle is proud to announce multiple winners from the Special Olympics held Friday, April 23rd at Clemson University. Mrs. Petrillo's and Mr. Shipman's classes represented our school well and earned second place in the spirit competition in addition to winning multiple individual events. Super Science Club Summer Camp

The PMS Super Science Club is hosting a summer camp from Monday, June 28th through Friday, July 2nd. Rising 7th and 8th graders are invited to attend this camp where they will get to dissect a pig fetus, shoot rockets, and participate in fun physics experiments and other scientific adventures. The cost of the camp is $60 for the week, and anyone interested should contact Mrs. Laura Anderson at 878-8735. The special education department will host its annual Spring Prom for Special People on Saturday, April 24th from 5-9pm in the Pickens Middle gym. This year’s theme is “Beach Party,” and local citizens served by the Pickens County Board of Disabilities will be invited to be a part of this fun-filled evening.

Bookmark Winners Announced

Three students were chosen from a stack of entries as winners of this year's bookmark contest. They were challenged to promote reading in a creative, eye-catching way, and each contributor did a FANTASTIC job of meeting and exceeding the challenge! All entries will be submitted to the Pickens County Library's contest as well, so the winners (and even the ones who did not win at the school level) will have a chance to place at the county level.

FFA Team Receives Recognition

Pickens Middle's FFA Round Robin Team traveled to Gettys Middle on Tuesday, March 23rd to compete in the FFA Middle School Round Robin Competition. The team, consisting of Becky Tarone, Davis Hendricks, Sissy Riddle, and Kelcie Smith, placed 3rd in the competition. The team also took first place for highest score in the Team FFA Creed Event, while Sissy, Kelcie, and Davis received a certificate for having a perfect score on the tool identification part of the competition. Congratulations, girls!

Young Artists Shine!

Several Pickens Middle artists were recently recognized at the Pickens County Museum in honor of Youth Arts Month 2010. Eighth grader Kyle McManis, whose work Landscape is featured at the left, won FIRST PLACE in the entire county for his pastel drawing. Director's Choice certificates were given to Anna Chastain, Olivia Pridgen, and Megan Smith for their entries as well. The students' pieces will be on display at the museum through March 25th, and the public is invited to stop by and see the wonderful young talent we have in Pickens County. Congratulations on a job well done!

PMS Celebrates Read Across America Day

Pickens Middle students participated in Read Across America Day- which coincides with Dr. Seuss's birthday- on Tuesday, March 2nd. Mrs. Hope's class enjoyed hearing The Cat in the Hat and delving into Dr. Seuss's biography, while Mrs. Reeves's classes explored his works through a Webquest online. The media center also got into the spirit of the day by donning the signature tall hats and by hosting a contest where students named a Dr. Seuss book for a chance to win a $10 gift certificate to the book fair! New Chicks Join the PMS "Brood"

Mrs. Davis's and Mrs. Lilland's class has been studying the reproductive cycle of chickens for the last few weeks and was able to welcome ten new chicks to our PMS family at the end of the process. The first chick, Primo, is shown here breaking through his shell. His nine siblings soon followed and all are doing well as they begin a new life in the big, big world.

Students Enjoy Literacy Reward

Students who have read six out of the seven books and completed their literacy projects earned a "Triple H" reward this week. They enjoyed hot chocolate at lunch on Thursday and were able to wear a hat on Friday. Each deserving student also received a homework pass. Students will continue to be rewarded in the months ahead for their hard work, and we are happy to see all of the excitement about reading at Pickens Middle!

H1N1 Flu Clinic

The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control will be sponsoring an H1N1 flu shot clinic for Pickens Middle School students, faculty, and staff on January 11th. These are the vaccines for the "Swine Flu." Only students whose parents have indicated that they wish them to receive the vaccine and who have turned in a signed permission form to this effect will be given the shots.

Santa Claus, escorted in a police cruiser by SRO Brad Smith, arrived at Pickens Middle on Tuesday, December 14th to spend time with some very special students. Santa stopped by Mrs. Petrillo's class to give each child a bag of surprises and then enjoyed cake and goodies with several students, parents, and staff members. Santa's visit is always a highlight of the Christmas season here at Pickens Middle- thanks to everyone who joins with him to make this day possible for these precious children!

We have used Greek and Latin Word Roots to help decode words; additionally, we have searched for foreshadowing clues and words that evoke mood in short stories. All ELA classes will read the novel Cast Two Shadows, set in Camden, SC, during the American Revolution.

8th Grade Career Fair

The second annual SDPC 8th Grade Career Fair will be held at Rock Springs Baptist Church on November 19, 2009, from 8:30am until 2pm. Over thirty business community speakers will give eighth graders a glimpse into the world of work. PMS students will take buses to the event in the afternoon, returning to school before dismissal time. All counselors, 8th grade teachers, and students will be onsite to make this a meaningful, standards-based learning activity. Students will choose their speakers online before the day of the event and will have a list of where they are to go before they arrive at the career fair. This is an Education and Economic Development Act Initiative supported by the SC legislature and the business community. We appreciate our corporate sponsors who are helping make this county-wide learning activity possible.

CARE Meets on Thursday

PMS T-Shirts Available

Beginning Monday, 10/26, the Special Education Department will be selling gray long-sleeved "Pickens Sparks" t-shirts to the faculty, staff, and students during all lunches. The cost for the shirts will be $12 (S,M,L,XL), $13 (2XL), and $14 (3XL). The money raised from the t-shirt sales will be used to assist special education students with field trip costs and to help fund the Spring Prom for Special People in April.

Open House Scheduled

Pickens Middle's annual Open House night will be held on Monday, October 5th from 6:30-7:30pm. Everyone will meet in the gym at 6:30pm briefly to elect PTO and School Improvement Council officers. At 6:45pm, students and parents will be dismissed to various locations in the school as follows:

Rookie Camp 2009

Pickens Middle School’s “Rookie Camp” day was held on August 24th with over 200 students and 225-plus parents participating in the day’s events. This was an increase of 40 students from last year’s inaugural event and represents almost 70% of our current sixth graders! Administrators, guidance counselors, a representative from bus transportation, and members of our faculty and staff met with parents and students the first thirty minutes of the day. The parents were then dismissed and the students rotated through their schedules finding their classrooms, receiving their locks/lockers, meeting all of their teachers and classmates, learning school procedures, and participating in fun activities. Lunch was provided by the school. We wish all of our new sixth-graders a successful, exciting year here at Pickens Middle!

8th Graders Visit Nation's Capitol

Recently the 8th graders took their annual field trip to Washington, D.C. There were 145 students, 33 parents/adults, and 16 Pickens Middle personnel on the trip. They left the school Wednesday, May 27th at 4 am and were mostly traveling that first day but were able to visit Mount Vernon, the estate of President George Washington. The next day was a very full day of visiting the Smithsonian Museums, Monuments and Memorials at the nation’s capitol. On Friday, they visited Arlington National Military Cemetary and watched the changing of the guard at The Tomb of the Unknowns. They left Washington late in the morning and arrived back in Pickens at about 10:30 pm. Everyone was very tired, but it was one of the best Washington trips yet.

Mrs. Lisa Davis's classes have been studying the Middle Ages and recently hosted a Medieval Museum to showcase all they have learned about this exciting period of history. Students were able to show off their hand-built medieval manors as well.

The Pickens Middle Band played its final performance under the direction of Mr. Bob Powell on Wednesday, May 20th in the school gym. Mr. Powell is retiring this year and leaves an amazing legacy through the program that he has built while teaching here at PMS. Thank you for many great years of music, Mr. Powell!

Youth Basketball Camp

8th Grade Washington Trip Meeting

There will be a meeting Tuesday, May 19th at 6 pm for students, parents and chaperones for the 8th grade field trip to Washington, D.C. The meeting will be held in the school cafeteria. At the meeting we will discuss rules and expectations for the trip and give additional information. Participants will also receive their trip t-shirts. If a parent going on the trip has not received the required volunteer training, Dr. Floyd will conduct a training session at 5 pm.

Book Fairy Visits PMS!

Pickens Middle School students who have read 9 out of the 11 literacy program books received a special surprise on Thursday- they were able to pick out a book to keep for their personal libraries! We distributed 588 books to these deserving readers, and they all seemed very excited to have their choice of titles. What a well-deserved reward...congratulations!

Pennies for Prevention a Success!

PMS students raised $1114.09 for Pennies for Prevention during the month of April. Mrs. Pruitt's eighth grade homeroom was the overall winner, raising $182.02 to help prevent child abuse in Pickens County. Other winning homerooms were Mrs. Dunn (6th) and Mrs. Cole (7th). Eighth-graders Sydney Alexander and Mak Higgins and seventh-grader Brooke Stewart will be representing Pickens High School in the 4x400 at the Upper State finals in Columbia on Saturday, May 9th. Sydney and Mak will also be representing PHS in the 4x800 that day. An extra congratulations goes out to Mak Higgins who broke the PHS 800 meter record on April 30th at the regional competition with a time of 2:35; she will compete in this event as well in the Upper State finals. Way to go, girls!

Seventh-grader Destin Nix was named overall winner in the children's category of the Pickens County Library's bookmark contest. Congratulations to Kelley Welborn, Levi Lance, Jessica Tarone, and Leanna Bearden for receiving 2nd place at the FFA Middle School Round Robin Competition in Columbia this past Saturday! The Round Robin team tied for the highest score on the tool identification part of the test, and Levi Lance scored highest of any competitor on the horticulture portion of the test. This team was led by their teacher, Mrs. Amy New. Way to go, team!

Sports Physicals Available to PMS Students

Although our school will not be able to offer physicals this year, Pickens Middle students will be allowed to participate in Easley High School's physicals on Saturday, May 9th in the McKelvey Gym at EHS. The cost is $20 and the physicals will be given from 9am until noon.
The last day to register and pay for a physical is May 6th. You must be registered and have paid for your exam by this date to receive a physical on May 9th.

8th Grade Field Trip Notice

Notice to those intending to go on the Washington Field Trip: Students that are signed up to participate are reminded that any infraction resulting in OSS may disqualify then from participating in the trip. If a student is disqualified from going for that reason, money will be refunded for any part of the trip that has not been prepaid as a deposit.

PMS Raises Money to Fight Cancer

Pickens Middle School students recently joined the fight against cancer by raising $1500 for the Relay for Life challenge. The PMS Jr. Beta Club sponsored this fundraiser as part of their service-learning goals, and all monies collected will go towards cancer research and prevention. Stress & Depression in Adolescents Seminar

Inventors Show Their Ideas

Mrs. Riddle recently traveled with Tessa Dunaway, Coleman Gilstrap, Davis Hendricks, Austen McPeters, Skye Schade, Tyler Stockton, Antron Wakefield, Skyler Walker, and Silas Whitmire to the 2009 BiLo Invention Convention. The students displayed their original inventions along with hundreds of other students at the BiLo center on Wednesday 3/4 and Thursday 3/5. Although none of the students from Pickens Middle School placed in the event, it was a great opportunity for all of them.

PMS Aids Gleaning House
February 13, 2009
PMS students collected 900 cans and $250.00 for our local food pantry, The Gleaning House. The seventh grade focus is our community. Ms. Porter's ELA classes wrote public service announcements, made daily announcements, and other publicity for this event. Seventh grade math classes worked with measurement in conjunction to this project. These activities made our effort to help others a true service learning experience. Gleaning House also receives help from Bob Owen's students as they assist in sorting donations and packing food boxes for families served by this organization.
8th Grade Field Trip Payment Information

The next payment for the 8th grade field trip to Washington, D.C. is due on Friday, February 20th. It is for $100 if other standard payments have been made. The last payment of $75 is due by April 3rd. If students have raised money for their trip by selling coupon books they will be able to deduct that from their payment. Sparks' Aglow Health Fair Is Coming!

Pickens Middle will host a health fair on Tuesday, February 10th from 6pm-8pm in the school gym. ALL parents, students, and community members are encouraged to attend this informative, FREE event! Representatives from various health agencies will be on hand to offer FREE information about services you have access to in Pickens County. There will also be FREE eye screenings, blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing, and immunization verification, among other services. Please make plans to attend!

We are pleased to announce that for the ninth year in a row, Pickens Middle is the home school of the South Carolina Beta Club President! Seventh-grader Samantha Wagner was elected to this coveted position on Friday at the state convention in Myrtle Beach. Our campaign skit troupe also took top honors, and the Tower Power team placed 2nd out of 48 schools in their competition. Congratulations to our Beta students for exhibiting excellence in and out of the classroom!

$1000 Goal Met for Mill Preservation Project

On October 31st, Sparks' Dream Team and Team Phoenix sponsored a Halloween Dance and were able to meet their goal by raising $1000 for Hagood Mill. Pickens County is in the process of raising money for the new Rock Art Center which will soon be built to preserve the ancient petroglyphs found near the mill. Many thanks to all the students who attended the dance and bought refreshments; your monetary support helped the teams reach their goal. Additional thanks go to the parents and students who helped with the dance- you should be proud of your service to your community!

Team Phoenix Tours Pickens
October 31, 2008
Team Phoenix went on a historical tour of Pickens on Wednesday, Oct. 29th. The morning tour, guided by Mrs. Una Wellborn and several volunteers from the Pickens Historical Society, included the Griffin House, Colonial House, and the Hagood-Mauldin House. Students were then treated to a tour of the courthouse which included a mock trial and scavenger hunt. After a restful lunch break at the First Pickens Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, students continued their tour past other sites such as the old Hiawatha Hotel and ended at the Boggs House where students made entries into their sketchbooks and journals. Finally, after a drink of water kept cool for them by the Corner Grill, students headed back to school, tired but wiser.

Red Ribbon Week is a time to increase awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, and Pickens Middle will once again be participating in this nationwide event beginning October 23rd. Events include:

8th Grade Field Trip

Veterans' Day Art Contest

Students are invited to participate in this year’s Veterans’ Day Art Contest by drawing an original patriotic-themed work and submitting it to Mrs. Dalton in the media center by Thursday, October 16th. Twelve winners’ pieces will be selected to include in a calendar that will be given to our guests during the Veterans’ Day reception. Artwork should be hand-drawn (not computer-generated) on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of white paper and should include the student’s full name on the back. Please see Mrs. Dalton with any questions.

Team Phoenix Soars

Team Phoenix, led by Dr. Susan Hilyer, is part of the South Carolina State Department of Education and one of 25 such teams across the state. Dr. Hilyer states, "Our goal is to incorporate state standards with a community project outside the classroom. This year our project will include the investigation of the recently discovered petroglyths (ancient rock carvings) and the other local history found at Hagood Mill and within Pickens City Limits. We have just made the first of four trips to the Mill. We thank Mrs. Ginger Chastain and Mrs. Mickey Miller who helped us. Students learned about old-time measurements, participated in scavenger hunts, hiked a trail, and wrote and drew in their sketch books. We look forward to our next trip on October 10th." Any parents interested in going on the trip should call the guidance office for volunteer training.

Team Phoenix Ties the Knot

The sixty-five members of seventh grade's Team Phoenix recently participated in a color-combining, team-building exercise of tie-dying t-shirts. Their science teacher, Dr. Susan Hilyer, led the group in binding and dipping their shirts in order to create a phoenix design in the center- and some of them actually worked!

Literacy Program Launches

The PMS literacy program has begun! Every teacher, staff member, and student in the school will read 12 books outside of school this year, and we know that we will see GREAT gains in students' reading abilities. "Rookie Camp" a Success

Pickens Middle School's first "Rookie Camp" for rising sixth graders was a huge success. Over 160 students attended the one day camp aimed at assisting sixth graders in adjusting to middle school. The students walked through a typical day of their schedule, met their teachers, learned how to use their locks and had lunch at the middle school.

In order to make the transition to sixth grade a smooth one for our students and parents, Pickens Middle School will be hosting a "6th Grade Rookie Camp" for our rising sixth graders. Rookie Camp will be held on Monday, August 11, 2008 from 8:30am until 1:30pm. Parents are invited to attend, with their child, from 8:30am to 9:30am. Students will remain at the school until 1:30pm. A free lunch will be provided. We are also offering a t-shirt this year for $5.00 which the students will pre-purchase and receive at camp.

PACT Testing Starts May 13

Parents are reminded that PACT testing will start on Tuesday May 13, and continue on May 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22. Students need to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast in order that they may do their best on the test. We ask that there be no late arrivals or early dismissals those days because we can not interrupt testing to call a student to the office. Testing times are approxiamtely 8:15- 12:00 Noon.

Athletic Physicals for Next School Year

Once again, Pickens Middle School, in conjunction with the local medical community, will be offering physical examinations for all present 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The cost for this exam will be just $15.00, and will be held on Tuesday, April 15, beginning at 5:15pm at the school.
This exam on April 15 is for any present 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student who is considering playing a sport at Pickens Middle and/or Pickens High in 2008-2009. If your child is thinking about trying out for a team next year, take advantage of this opportunity. The physical is required of all student/athletes on a yearly basis by the South Carolina High School League before the prospective participants can try out for a team.

Sydney Alexander was crowned Miss Seventh Grade with Taylor Underwood selected as the runner-up. Miss Sixth Grade is Michaela Leslie and Samantha Anthony was the runner-up.

Lawson Elected State Beta Club President

Emily Lawson was elected South Carolina Junior Beta Club President at the annual convention on December 6-7 in Myrtle Beach. This marks the eighth consecutive year that a Pickens Middle School student has been elected as State President.
